Shaker Style: Philly's Growing Kitchen Cabinet Trend
What is “Shaker Style”?
Shaker style is a style of furniture and cabinet design that was created by the United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing or “Shakers”. The shakers were a prominent religious society in the 18th and 19th centuries who practiced their faith through craftsmanship. They developed great architectural distinction and were pioneers in furniture making. Their style stressed great importance on simplicity, honesty, and function. In examples of shaker cabinetry you will see natural or painted wood recessed panels, defined by simple, clean lines. One could categorize shaker style into “contemporary transitional”.Currently Trending
Shaker Style cabinetry is IN right now and will continue to trend for a few years to come. In the past, high modernistic design style was popular, but as people have a newfound love for the classics, this transitional style gives respect to both old and new as it has roots in tradition yet still appears sleek, simplistic, and contemporary. In 2014, white colored shaker cabinets were extremely popular and continue to trend. However a rising trend is grey painted cabinetry and we should expect to see more of that in months to come. This again stems from newfound love for the classic look as the grey gives a weathered appearance.
Material Combination
In kitchen and bathroom design, cabinetry selection is BIG. For the most part, the overall look and feel of the space comes from the cabinetry. However there is a lot more than just the cabinetry here. As the great designer Mies Van der Rohe said “God is in the Details”. This is ever so relevant in kitchen and bath design. Choosing the right details, such as backslash and hardware, that pair nicely with shaker style cabinets is very important. You can go with endless options in terms of choosing hardware for you cabinets. One option that you can’t go wrong with is traditional nickel or steel knobs and bin pulls. Their simple and unadorned look pairs nicely with shaker cabinets which share common qualities. If you are looking to go for an even more traditional look, you may choose vintage glass or ceramic knobs. With a stained wood option, white ceramics give a stark contrast against the darker wood. Check out this White Hexagonal Glass Knob to start some ideas. Another vintage looking hardware choice would be antique style pulls with exposed screws. These Antique Brass Aubrey Pulls give a classic look that pairs well with shaker cabinetry and stays true to the function of the hardware, much like the Shaker’s original design principles. If you choose to go with a more modern look for you cabinets, choose tubular or flat bar pulls. They will blend traditional and modern quite nicely in your design.Choosing a backslash that pairs with your cabinets gets a bit trickier. Tile backsplashes are not easy to appear as “traditional” so blending them and shaker style cabinets can be difficult. Going with a subway tile backsplash is one option, another is the popular glass linear mosaic backsplash.
Pairing two different colors of cabinetry is another tactic used in creating a stunning kitchen space. The popular “low dark, high white” look gives a visual hierarchy which is quite nice. Another strategy is contrasting your wall cabinet color with your island color, as shown below.
